IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION TO THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 16 MAKASSAR
USING FOLKTALES


ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of folktales can improves the English reading Comprehension to the second grade students. Conducted a pre- experimental research design. The population was the second grade students of  SMP Negeri 16 Makassar in academic year 2009/2010. It applied cluster random sampling technique; the total sample was 30 students. The research data were collected by using reading test instruments, namely pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed in t-test analysis by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Program.

The result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The Value of t-test (25.48) was greater than the t-table (1.699), where 25.48>1.699, at the level significance (p) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = N-1 = 30-1 = 29. With this evidence, then, the Null Hypothesis was rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. In the pretest, most of the students were in very poor classification. After giving some treatment, in post test, most of students made progress and were in good classification.
The result of the research showed that using folktales could improve the students’ reading comprehension.
